The government has advised the Tinderet Sub County residents on the safety measures to undertake to protect lives and property during the impending heavy rains in the area.
Esther Olivia Odhiambo, Tinderet Deputy County Commissioner said that they need to remain vigilant, and earnestly follow the constant weather reports issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, and act accordingly.
“We perennially experience heavy floods in this area, big rocks rolling downhill and landslides which always cause a lot of damages by inflicting injuries on the people, destroying homes and farm crops,” Odhiambo observed.
She further warned the residents to desist from crossing overflowing rivers, urgently to relocate to higher safer grounds, and stop farming and cutting down trees on top of hills.
These activities, she pointed out, lead to soil erosion and contribute to heavy rocks descending downhill to wreak havoc.
“Some of the areas that they need to keenly observe these safety measures include; Chebirir, Sosion, Togomin, Kipkoin and Kimwaren located in Kimelil location,’’ she clarified by adding that people in places like Soba, Kolombet, Kichaba and Kereru also needs to be extra cautious.
According to the seven-day weather forecast issued by the Meteorological Department valid from September 26 to October 2, rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the Coast.
Pocketed areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern lowlands, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley will experience low average night-time (minimum) temperatures of less than 10 degrees Celsius.
Similarly, occasional morning cloudiness will be expected over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley and the South-Eastern lowlands.
Ms Odhiambo also reiterated that other places like Kabirer, Kapchanga, Kolongei, Kapkoin and Buset are highly estimated to experience landslides while in Kapsimwotwa Ward (Daraja Mbili-Kapsinendet), Kapkora (Kepsire location) and Kimongot in Chepsire location (Barasendu) and Chepkuk in Kibwareng location.
Similar clarion calls were made to those living in Chemelil-Chemase Ward, Karamet and Kaiboi hills, to remain on high alert. Seter, Kabisaga and Meteitei in the Tinderet ward, Setek, Chepkrum, and Natumia in the Chepkemoi location.
