TSC announces mass recruitment of teachers

By Peter Ochieng

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced mass recruitment of teachers, to address a shortage in primary, junior and secondary schools across the country.

According to an advertisement placed on the TSC website, the Nancy Macharia led Commission is seeking to employ 46,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

39,550 slots are for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), 450 for Secondary Schools and 6, 000 for Primary Schools.

“Interested and qualified candidates should submit their applications online through the Teachers Service Commission’s website, www.tsc.go.ke, under ‘Careers’ or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke,” the advert reads in part.

The Primary School applicants, the advertisement adds, must have at least a P1 certificate, while those applying for the junior or senior secondary school positions must hold at least a diploma in education.

Those serving as interns have been urged to apply within their current counties, sub-counties, or workstations, and will only be required to present their identity cards during verification.

The deadline for submitting applications is October 7, 2024.

On September 02, 2024, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) leadership called off the teachers' strike after striking a return-to-work formula with the Teachers Service Commission.

KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori said the one-week strike was suspended after entering a tentative agreement with the TSC.

KUPPET leadership was pushing for the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), and employment of more junior secondary school teachers among other demands.

"We suspend our strike and ask all our teachers to go back to class pending the speedy resolutions of these matters as already agreed upon between us and the commission," stated Misori.

"The government has successfully implemented all the provisions of the 2021-2025 CBA with the teachers' unions, specifically the second phase of the CBA which was due on July 1, 2024," added TSC boss, Macharia.
