Morara Kebaso released on bail

By Peter Ochieng

Activist Morara Kebaso has been released on bail.

The lawyer turned human rights activist was released on Sh50, 000 bail, shortly after being arraigned and charged for cyber harassment contrary to Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act.

The prosecution accuses Kebaso of posting false information, about one David Langat.

“David Morara Kebaso alias Morara Kebaso Snr on the 28th day of September 2024 at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, jointly with others not before the court, while using the X Corp Account dubbed; @MoraraKebasoSnr, knowingly without lawful excuse, posted false information…” the charge sheet read in part.

The prosecution stated that Kebaso in his post, falsely claimed that President William Ruto had approached Langat for financial assistance during the 2022 presidential campaigns.

He claimed Langat took huge loans using his properties as collateral, and that he is now being auctioned by banks after President Ruto reportedly refused to settle the debts, and “was instead taking over Langat’s properties at an undervalued price.”

The Inclusive National Justice, Economic and Civic Transformation (INJECT) party leader was set free on Sh50, 000 bail.

The case will be mentioned on Friday, October 04, 2024, when the magistrate will rule on whether he will be charged or not. Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua was among a contingent of lawyers who represented the activist at the Milimani Law Courts.

He was arrested by police officers, after a raid at his main office in Kahawa Sukari, Nairobi on Monday.

He came into fame at the height of anti-government protests in June, with a new brand of activism, which entailed moving around the country exposing stalled or unfinished government projects, even after billions of funds were allocated for completion.

After his arrest, he was taken to the Nairobi Regional Police Headquarters in Nairobi, with his team, including lawyers allegedly being blocked from accessing him, before being arraigned in court today.
