Police in Thika yesterday night shot dead two gangsters after a botched robbery incident at a shop in Ngoingwa Estate.
Thika West Sub County Police Commander Lawrence Muchangi said the two were in a group of a gang that had robbed the nearby Thika Girls Secondary School Karibaribi of 16 laptops and injured two watchmen, one of who later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
He said a police officer who lives in one of the apartments near the shop heard some commotion at around 2am and after responding met two gangsters who threatened him with crowbars.
“That's when he drew his gun and gunned them down. Other members of the gang managed to escape with gunshot wounds, Muchangi said.
He added that the gangsters had entered the shop by cutting a perimeter barbed wire, removed several goods from the shop, and were in the process of packing them into sacks to ferry to their hideout.
Muchangi said during the incident, they received information about the robbery at Karibaribi school and calmed the situation down.
He called on anyone with information of individuals with fresh gunshot wounds to report to the police adding they are part of the gang that has been terrorizing residents in the area.
He warned that police will be ruthless in dealing with criminals and will not relent until they ensure the safety of residents.
“This is a very small group of people and we shall deal with them ruthlessly. No criminal will be at peace in Thika,” he warned.
