Ukraine conflict could lead to World War three - Commissioner Okundi

By Peter Ochieng

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Commissioner Philip Okundi is worried that the ongoing Ukraine – Russia conflict may degenerate into World War three.

Addressing the press in Kisumu ahead of the United Nations (UN) International Day of Peace (IDP) marked every September 21, Okundi said the whole world will be at risk, if the conflict which started over 2 years ago, gets out of hand.

“Even this Ukraine – Russia war we are having could lead to World Word three. If that happens, someone may decide to release nuclear weapons, and everyone will be at risk,” said Okundi.

The International Day of Peace has been celebrated since 1981.

This year’s theme is cultivating the culture of peace.

National celebrations will be marked in Pokot West, with other celebrations taking place in all the other Counties.

The Kisumu chapter event will be staged at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports ground. Kisumu, Commissioner Okundi said, will host IDP national celebrations in 2025.

Kisumu is widely known for the Sondu border conflict, which has resulted in deaths of tens of the people over the years.

However, communities around the border town have embraced peaceful co-existence, since Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and his Kericho counterpart, Eric Mutai met over the issue early this year.

“The two governors agreed that people cannot continue fighting,” said Okundi.

Daniel Opiyo, Kisumu County Chief of Staff said there can never be development without peace, urging each individual to embrace peaceful co-existence.

On her part, Lucy Boaz, Kisumu Assistant County Commissioner said, “Everyone has a responsibility of ensuring there’s peace.”

“Peace is a process that must be embraced by everyone,” emphasized Roseline Onunga, from the Local Capacities for Peace Initiative (LCPI).

NCIC was established under the NCIC Act. No.12 of 2008 with the mandate to facilitate and promote peaceful co-existence between persons of different ethnic and racial communities of Kenya.

The Commission carries out its mandate in collaboration with various and state and none-state actors.
