Ulinzi Stars won the 2024 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Cup, after beating Kibera Soccer Women 2-1 in a final staged at the Police Sacco grounds.
The title is the third in a row for the soldiers, having triumphed in 2021 and 2022. The competition was not staged in 2022 due to a Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) suspension.
Starlets took a 2-0 into the half time break, before Kibera scored a consolation goal in the second half. They beat arch rivals Kenya Police Bullets in the semis to book a final berth, while Kibera beat Zetech Sparks in the other semifinal.
Earlier at the Police Sacco grounds, Kenya Police Bullets edged out Zetech Sparks 4-3 to win bronze. Elsewhere, two Police clubs, that is to say Police FC and Police Bullets who recently had good runs in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League, and the FKFK Women Premier League respectively will require a total of Sh43m to prepare for the inter clubs’ continental assignments.
Addressing players and other stakeholders hosted in honour of the police footballers at a Nairobi hotel on Wednesday, Dr Raymond Omollo, Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary (PS) said friendly matches for the two teams are lined up. Omollo is the team’s patron.
“The Police FC need Sh19 million while Police Bullets need Sh24 million for the preparations for the upcoming Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) and Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions,” said Omollo.
The event was attended by among others Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, who attributed the recent success of the two teams to good management. “The improvement of sports standards in the country is a key priority for President William Ruto administration,” said the CS.
He applauded Omollo for providing leadership and support to the teams.
