University students surprise pupils with school uniforms
By Peter Ochieng
Some needy pupils within four primary schools in Nyakach constituency have a reason to smile, after being surprised by brand new uniforms by university students from the area, under their umbrella, Nyakach University Students Association (NUSA).
A total of 40 pupils in Nyamarumbe, Abwao, Ng’ope na Odhong’ primary schools received the donation during an outreach carried out by NUSA officials and members on Wednesday.
The uniforms were purchased after the students received a financial donation from Dr Johannes Atellah, who is getting his arsenals ready to contest for the Nyakach Parliamentary seat in 2027.
Speaking after leading the uniform distribution exercise at Odhong’ Primary School, Tobias Osano, NUSA Secretary General said he believes the exercise will go a long way in bringing hope to beneficiaries, with a majority of them coming from needy families.
“We have directed hope to the pupils to make them feel comfortable in class. This exercise is not going to decelerate soon, we are going to move across all schools,” said Osano.
“As students we don’t have money to facilitate this venture. We have well-wishers supporting us. And one of the well-wishers who have been pivotal in driving this initiative is Dr. Johannes Atellah who has stood with comrades to make it a success,” he added.
Leakey Ochieng, NUSA chairman said they intend to incorporate tree planting into their school outreaches, as a measure towards environmental conservation.
“It is our responsibility to protect the ozone layer of our atmosphere. Planting of trees is key in enhancing environmental conservation,” stated the chairman.
On her part, speaking on behalf of the girl child, Velma Awuor, NUSA member said their next activities will entail distribution of sanitary pads to female pupils.
“We also acknowledged that they also have challenges to do with lack of sanitary pads. We are planning to come back again with sanitary towels.”
Teachers and pupils led by George Oloo, Odhong’ Primary School deputy headteacher applauded the move by NUSA officials, urging other well-wishers not to shy away from supporting vulnerable learners.
