World Cup winners Argentina lost for the first time in 14 matches in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Uruguay on Thursday night at a world cup qualifying game played at Bombonera In Buenos Aires. 

Argentina had not lost since winning the world cup in December last year winning eight straight matches without conceding a goal. 

It was Barcelona's Right Back Ronald Araujo who put Uruguay ahead in the 41st minute Uruguay going 1-0 up at half time. 

Araujo was served by a fine cross from Matias Vina placing it at the far post to score his first International goal for Uruguay. 

With Argentina pushing for an equalizer, Uruguay doubled their lead in the 87th minute thanks to a goal from Darwin Nunez.

The Liverpool striker finished off a counter-attack following a through pass from Nicolas de la Cruz, moments after Lionel Messi had lost possession.

Thursday's game was Messi's first in Argentina since he won his eighth Ballon d'Or.

The 36-year-old was presented with a special plaque before the game to commemorate his record-breaking achievement.

Messi was lucky not to be sent off in the 20th minute after he appeared to elbow Uruguay defender Mathias Olivera before grabbing his neck.

Despite Thursday's defeat, Argentina still occupy first place in South America's World Cup qualification league table with 12 points while uruguay climb with 10 points .

Argentina will travel to Rio for Brazil on Tuesday.
