Vihiga Queens win Premier League as Shujaa suffer relegation set back
Vihiga Queens are the 2022/2023 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women Premier League Champions.
The Vihiga county government sponsored side won the title for a fourth time in a row on Sunday, after defeating Nakuru City Queens 2-1, with Anita Namata scoring both goals.
"HURRAAAYYYYY!!!!!! Give it up for the 2022/2023 FKF Women Premier League Champions Vihiga Queens Football Club. The legacy makers!" the team celebrated on social media.
The side clinched the title with a game to go before the season comes to an end, after closest challengers Gaspo Women drew 2-2 against Wadadia.
Boniface Nyamunyamu coached side lead league standings with 52 points, four ahead of second placed Gaspo.
The two sides will face each other in one of the end of the season matches.
Meanwhile, Kenya National Rugby Sevens side, Shujaa suffered relegation set back from the World Rugby Sevens Series for the first time in over 20 years.
Shujaa have been part and parcel of the grand rugby stage since 2000, but suffered relegation after losing to 12-7 to Canada in play-off final at the London Sevens on Sunday.
Canada becomes the 12th core team on the 2024 World Rugby Sevens Series.
That means Kenya, Uruguay and Tonga will enter their respective Regional Sevens Championships, so as to qualify for the 2024 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series.
