Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has expressed hope that President William Ruto will take the lead in the fight against corruption.

The senator further believes that Ruto's allies who will be found culpable of corruption will be held responsible.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, Onyonka said the former regime under retired President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to fight corruption.

He however hopes it will not be the same scenario in the current government.

But according to Onyonka, for Kenya Kwanza to be a law-abiding regime it should start in the fight against corruption and from there they will be believed by Kenyans.

"The president should continue to have these people arrested and have them subjected to due process," he said.

The Azimio-allied legislator also challenged President Ruto to be an example to other government officials by ensuring accountability in his government.

"I remember Uhuru did it once even during that time of course there were contradictions about the people who are being accused of having participated in the crime," he said.

He also noted that for Ruto to succeed in the fight against corruption, he needs to put in place more effort and correct measures to curb the menace.

The government is already facing two graft scandals which have seen several senior government officials sacked and others suspended.

Following the new Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) scam, Public Health Principal Secretary Dr Josephine Mburu was sacked, the KEMSA board disbanded and the agency's Chief Executive Officer was suspended.

27 top government officials have also been suspended over the irregular release of 20,000 bags of condemned sugar.

Amid the two scandals hitting his administration, President Ruto warned that anyone found involved in the theft of public funds will be dealt with accordingly.

“No one will steal or waste public resources. I will deal with them. I will take personal responsibility in accounting for the resources of the people of Kenya. Whoever will try (to steal) public money will be dealt with accordingly," he said last week.
