Four Kenya Prisons Service officers accused of issuing fake National Police Service (NPS) recruit reporting letters and defrauding victims of Ksh2.1million have been arrested.
According to NPS, two victims; Stellah Kemunto and Joash Ounde filed a report at Kiamumbi Police Station claiming they had been introduced to a person named Jefferson Kivuva, who allegedly introduced them to a con-syndicate that promised them admission letters for the Police training college in Kiganjo.
According to Kemunto and Ounde, they were to receive admission letters after making a mandatory fee, but that was not the case, as they became the latest victims of the syndicate.
“They became suspicious when upon payment, they went to pick their letters at an agreed location only to be met by people in a white probox hawking recruit reporting letters to unsuspecting victims.
“Upon the arrival of police officers at the scene, the suspects attempted to flee but during the melee, four of them were arrested and twenty (20) additional fake letters recovered from a white Toyota Probox car that was later towed to Kiamumbi Police Station,” NPS’ statement read in part.

Four members of the con-syindicate that were arrested have since been identified as officers of Kenya Prisons. The four; Sergeant Violet Gachomo (Industrial Area Motor Vehicle Depot), Corporal Ben Mburu (Industrial Area Remand Prison), Corporal Florence Ndung'u and Corporal Beatrice Wambui (Prisons Headquarters) are currently behind bars aiding with investigations.
NPS has urged Kenyans to be alert and only engage with verified police communication channels in a bid to avoid being defrauded.
“We want to remind the public that the National Police Service concluded its recruitment drive on 24th March 2022 and there is no ongoing recruitment drive in the Service. The public is urged not to fall for con-scheme ploys meant to benefit fraudsters at their expense.
“While we encourage victims of similar con-schemes to book reports at their nearest police stations for assistance, we promise not to relent in taking tough and decisive action against persons responsible for similar criminality,” NPS added.
