Maraga hails Rwanda elections

By Peter Ochieng

Former Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga has hailed the recently concluded elections in Rwanda, terming the process as one of its kind.

Speaking in Kigali in his capacity as the Head of the East Africa Community (EAC) Election Observation Mission to Rwanda, Maraga said the process was one of the best he has ever witnessed, due to a high degree of peace and order experienced.

"The electoral process was very orderly and very peaceful. In fact, it is one of the best electoral processes I have seen. It was very commendable especially on the polling day," Maraga said.

"In our report, we have mentioned that, in the final report we are also going to mention that the organisation was very super. We have seen some elections in some places which are chaotic, they are rowdy and noisy," added the former Chief Justice.

Maraga who was the CJ when the Supreme Court of Kenya overturned retired President Uhuru Kenyatta's presidential win in 2017, led a team of 55 officials from EAC partner States and the East African Legislative Assembly, to serve as observers in Rwanda's Monday elections.

They were sent out to all 30 districts across Rwanda's four provinces and the City of Kigali. The electorate voted for the president and 53 legislatures.

President Paul Kagame won the presidential race with a 99 percent landslide, to extend his 24-year rule.

President William Ruto is among World leaders who have congratulated Kagame, after being reelected for a 4th term.

Ruto said he wishes him all the best as he embarks on another 7-year stretch in office, that will end in 2031.

"We celebrate with you the sovereign choice of the people of Rwanda and wish you success as you continue steering your country in the path of peace, stability and posterity," said Ruto.

"I look forward to continuing working with you in regional and Pan-African affairs in strengthening the bonds of solidarity and fraternity between the peoples of Kenya and Rwanda."
