Badilisha’s impeachment: Some MCAs oppose motion
By Peter Ochieng
A group of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) in Nyandarua have opposed a motion seeking to impeach governor Moses Ndirangu Kiarie, alias Badilisha.
The MCAs led by Majority Leader Mwangi Nyagah and Minority Leader Mwangi Gichuki, have expressed opposition to the motion, stating that it is baseless and procedurally flawed.
They advised Nyandarua residents to treat the motion as propaganda and hearsay. “MCAs are focused on addressing critical challenges facing local residents,” they stated.
“We are not ready for such a debate,” they added.
The motion is being spearheaded by Samuel Mathu Wainaina, MCA Mirangine Ward.
He accuses the governor of violating the constitution by unlawfully hiring staff and inflating the county wage bill.
The MCA further accuses governor Badilisha of breaching the law in many instances, and reportedly acting in full contempt of county laws.
He states that the governor is "unethical, deplorable and reprehensible" and that he is "incompatible with the high calling and dignified status of the office of the governor of Nyandarua County."
On or about September 5, 2024, the MCA states that through the County Executive Member for Finance, Economic Planning and ICT, governor Badilisha allowed and oversaw the Deployment of the governor’s Service Delivery Unit (GSDU) officers) to head the seven revenue stations in the county contrary to the dictates of law.
"This can only be ill planned to defraud and misappropriate revenues at source and thereby negatively affect service delivery to the public of Nyandarua County," he said.
"The governor introduced a pyrethrum program in the budget, where seedlings were procured at huge amounts of money, only to end up not growing. The said pyrethrum program was nothing but a scum to syphon public coffers for selfish and personal enrichment by public funds," he argues.
If the Bill goes through, Badilisha will become the third governor to be impeached by the County Assembly since 2022.
Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza is still in office courtesy of a court order after being impeached by both the County Assembly and the Senate.
Kericho governor Eric Mutai survived at the altar of the Senate over a technicality, after MCAs impeached him.
