Government emphasizes parental role in combating social ills

President William Ruto called on parents to take an active role in fostering safe and supportive homes where the children can be protected from societal challenges.
Speaking at State House in Nairobi during a media briefing on women's rights, President Ruto underlined that with strong families, there is a formidable defense mechanism against the rising dangers posed to society in forms of gender-based violence and online exploitation.
"As a parent of four girls myself, I understand the critical role that parents play," President Ruto said. "Be there, be available for your children. Let us create homes where children feel safe, supported, and loved."
The President condemned the increasing cases of femicide and gender-based violence, declaring that such acts have no place in Kenya. He reassured the nation that the government remains resolute in its efforts to protect the vulnerable, pledging swift action against perpetrators.
"We will be relentless in protecting the vulnerable. Those responsible for gender-based violence will be held to account without hesitation," he affirmed.
President Ruto also expressed concern about the risks posed by social media platforms, which increasingly have become avenues of harm.
He urged children to exercise caution when engaging with strangers online and called on parents to guide their children in navigating the digital space safely.
"Social media has, in fact, turned into a high-risk zone. There is a need to sensitize our children to be watchful, while as parents, it is our bounden duty to be their first line of defense by remaining engaged and accessible," he added.
The President's statement follows increasing public concern over the incidents of gender-based violence and online exploitation among youngsters.
Activists have been demanding better enforcement of laws and more awareness campaigns related to these issues.
The President reaffirmed the commitment of the government to advancing women's rights and their personal security, adding that what was needed was a collective effort between the state and families for a society that is safer.
"Strong families are the foundation of a strong nation. We can face the threats in our midst and protect our people together," he said in conclusion.
