Zero casualties as search and rescue continues at collapsed building in Kahawa West

A First situation update from the Nairobi City County has confirmed zero casualties in the aftermath of a collapsed 7-storey building in Kahawa West on Sunday morning. 

The city country confirmed the incident where families are feared to be trapped inside the rabble. 

"The Nairobi City County Government confirms the collapse of a housing unit in Kahawa West area plot no. 233, along station road, Kahawa West." Said Governor Sakaja. 

A multi-agency team has since been deployed and search and rescue missions are currently underway as occupants of neighboring estates are currently being evacuated to prevent secondary disasters. 

"Currently, all Nairobi County Teams are fully engaged in disaster recovery and evacuating occupants from adjacent buildings." Sakaja added in a statement. 

The county Government says that Households had been evacuated last week following notice by the County Planning Department.

This follows country architecture surveys which revealed the building was not constructed under the right standards and lack legitimate permits. It was also showing signs of developing wall cracks raising alarm. 

Meanwhile, The number of people feared trapped in the building is still unknown while the situation remains tense as residents have crowded the areas to help in rescue operations.
