9 people have been injured after a passager-mini bus plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni crossing point in Mombasa country on Sunday morning.

Police reports confirmed that the Chania mini-bus bound to Nairobi, lost control and overturned. However no casualties have been reported from the incident.

"We have people on site but the bus has been retrieved from the water. We have received reports that there were approximately nine people injured. They were inside the bus," An officer stated.

"No deaths have been reported but we are still monitoring the situation for more updates," the officer added.

Photos taken at the scene shows the bus, bearing registration details KCF 236V christened Chania Executive lying on its side.

The Kenya Red Cross reports that seven of the nine who were injured, were treated at the scene, while three were taken to hospital.

The accident brought business at the busy channel to a standstill, causing multiple delays. Vehicles and pedestrians were unable to board ferries as transport activities on the crossing channel were disrupted.

The bus has been retrieved from the ocean with a slow return of normalcy being witnessed at the crossing channel.

Accidents at the channel have been common, with the most recent incident being on August 18, 2024, when a stampede broke out as commuters rushed to board the arriving MV Likoni after the MV Jambo ferry stalled, resulting in chaos and four injuries.
