Abdi Ahmed Mohamud is the new Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Chief Executive Officer.
He will officially assume office on January 11, 2025 when the outgoing CEO, Twalib Mbarak signs out after 6 years at the helm.
Mohamud’s appointment was made by EACC chairman David Oginde through a gazette notice. He will be in office for a 6-year non-renewable term.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 16 (1) of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2011, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission appoints Abdi Ahmed Mohamud to be the Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission,” Oginde said in the notice.
His appointment comes days after the National Assembly backed his nomination, on the backdrop of members of the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee chaired by Tharaka MP George Murugara, approved his nomination upon being vetted.
“Taking into consideration the findings of the committee on the vetting of the nominee, this House approves appointment of Mr. Mohamud as the secretary and CEO of the EACC,” the report tabled on the floor of the House reads.
Before his nomination by President William Ruto, Mohamud was serving as the deputy CEO at EACC. During his vetting, he informed MPs that he was worth Sh135 million.
As an insider, he said he was best placed to succeed Mbarak. “If approved, I will be the first CEO of the commission who is an insider and who understands the inside of the commission.” He admitted that the level of corruption is high in this country, caused by the slow prosecution process.
“The level of corruption in the country is extremely high. If people are investigated and charged quickly it will be justice served for the people.”
Initially, Mohamud served as the Director in charge of investigations at the EACC for over a decade, overseeing high-profile cases.
