Bishop Margaret Wanjiru appointed Nairobi Rivers Commission Chairperson

President William Ruto has appointed Bishop Margaret Wanjiru as the Chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission. 

In a Gazette Notice, The President also appointed nine other members to rhe board including Former Nairobi Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga. 

Other members include Mumo Musuva, Grace Senewa Mesopirr, John Kioli,Eva Muhia, Amos Chege Mugo, Carlotta Dalago, Rael Chebichii Lelei, Benjamin Langwen and Charles Karisa Dadu. 

The commission has been relocated from the Devolution Department in the Office of the Deputy President to the Housing Department in the Ministry of Lands. 

Furthermore, the original gazette notice from November 2022 has been revoked.

The Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC) is anchored in The Constitution of Kenya through the Environmental Management and Co-Ordination Act (No. 8 Of 1999) and the Climate Change Act (No. 11 of 2016) on environmental protection. 

The commission was established through a Gazette Notice Number 14891 on December 2nd, 2022 to reclaim the rivers of Nairobi as a spine to the city’s blue and green infrastructure for a better urban environment and quality of life. 

The Commission envisages a collaborative approach together with other stakeholders and development partners to secure, protect and restore the critical River Basin in order to achieve the shared goal of reclaiming the Nairobi River

The commission will also examine previous reports and recommendations made to reclaim the Nairobi River and adopt lessons learnt in the new initiative.
