A Friday noon adventure by four friends, turned tragic after one of them drowned in Chemorop River, Kabarnet, Baringo Central Sub-County.
The victim was identified as a 9-year-old boy, a former grade 3 pupil at the AIC Visa Oshwal primary school.
Confirming the incident, Kapropita area Chief Daniel Kimaliny said, "I got a call from one resident informing me that one of the boys had run home to inform his parents that a friend had drowned in the river. I therefore rushed to the scene and upon arrival, found a group of people gathered around the lifeless body of the boy that had already been retrieved."
Kimaliny then called the Kabarnet police who arrived at the scene shortly and transferred the body to the Baringo County referral hospital (BCRH) mortuary.
William Bowen, the head teacher at Visa Oshwal primary school said the pupil’s death was shocking, noting that according to unconfirmed reports, the death brings to 17 the number of children who have so far lost their lives in the same river.
"I got the shocking news through one of my teachers who called me as I had attended a funeral. The boy did not come to school on the material day as it was sports day and he was not participating," Bowen said.
One of the residents, Lydia Jeptoo, expressed concern over the dangerous river, noting that relevant authorities should fence it to prevent future loss of lives.
