Burglars raid Ombudsman’s offices in Nyahururu

The Commission on Administrative Justice (Ombudsman) offices in Nyahururu town were broken into and computers stolen after burglars took advantage of long hours of power outage during a heavy downpour.

Despite the office being located next to the Nyahururu Deputy County Commissioner’s office which is guarded by armed Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU) officers, the thieves also found an easy time breaking into other offices adjacent to the Ombudsman’s office.

The legal officer in charge of the Ombudsman office that serves Nyandarua, Laikipia and Samburu counties, Maina Karanja, said that he was worried on where the computers might land because they contained sensitive and classified documents.

“We did not lose any files since we have a backup of every file but I am worried about the sensitivity of the information taken away,” said Maina Karanja.

In addition to breaking into the Ombudsman’s offices, the thieves also stole computers from the neighbouring Laikipia West sub-county Public Health offices and those of the sub-county’s cooperative development. The Wednesday night incident adds to the number of government offices being broken into in the town.

In May this year, thieves broke into the Nyandarua North veterinary offices also located next to the Nyahururu sub-county offices, and made away with some vaccine storing equipment and computers but left a vandalized motorcycle they had targeted after it failed to start.

The incident comes after the Probation office also at the same compound was broken into and computers and other electronic appliances stolen.

Government vehicles parked in the same compound have also fallen been vandalized with thieves targeting car batteries, headlights, and side mirrors.
