An outbreak of cholera has been reported in Siaya County, with the local ministry of health officials confirming the reports.
According to the county executive committee member for health, Dr Martin Odhiambo K’Onyango, the single case was reported at Manywanda in West Uyoma.
This Dr K’Onyango said was after tests conducted on a patient who visited the local health facility turned positive.
Dr K’onyango who spoke to the media in Siaya town said that the patient visited Manywanda health centre three days ago complaining of vomiting and diarrhea, forcing the highly alert health officials to take specimen for further tests.
“The results came out this morning, confirming that it was a cholera case,” said the county health CECM.
He said that though the disease has been reported in other counties in the region, this was the first time a case was being reported in Siaya and called for calm among area residents saying the patient has been managed and therefore no cause for alarm.
The CECM said that the disease surveillance team has been dispatched to the ground to trace all the patient’s contacts and other required follow-ups.
