Residents of Bassi Boitang’are Ward in Bobasi Constituency, Kisii have a reason to smile after comedian-turned-philanthropist, Erick Omondi, offered to reconstruct a footbridge that has posed a risk to the residents for years.
Speaking to the press after visiting the Ward, Omondi said his move to construct the bridge was necessitated by a video that went viral on social media, showing a young girl crossing the dangerous footbridge, while heading to school.
“I am confident that Kenyans will support me in building this footbridge, so that the community can easily access the villages and children can go to school safely,” he said.
The area Member of the County Assembly (MCA), Thomas Nyabaro, noted the dilapidated footbridge connects Nyakumbati and Sarawa villages in the Ward and community members have been relying on it to access schools and the nearby buying center.
Nyabaro said the process of repairing the bridge had not reached the budget-making process in the county and as an MCA, he lacked the funds to assist in the reconstruction of the footbridge.
The MCA lauded Omondi and other well-wishers who had offered to reconstruct the bridge, adding that several bridges in the county need to be repaired.
One of the residents, Fred Machuki, decried the sorry state of the pedestrian bridge, especially during the rainy season, and expressed his gratitude to Omondi, saying that his visit has brought the village a sigh of relief.
