Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner John Korir has warned operators of homemade illicit brews that is sold from jerrycans in shadowy streets of villages and towns to stop their business with immediate effect or face the fully wrath of law enforcement officers in the county.

The County Commissioner said, more than half of the alcohol consumed by the residents of the county is illicit and dangerous. Speaking to the Kenya News Agency, Korir directly warned anyone running such businesses.

"We are fighting illicit brews to ensure that the public is sober and able to carry on with their daily works productively for community development," he said.

While law enforcement has not turned a blind eye to it, it is threatening future generations and has now captured the attention of the government.

Korir emphasized the need to educate society on the harmful dangers of illicit breweries and the health challenges they can cause to the consumer.

"We are going to fight to eliminate illicit brew until a sober society is achieved," he added.

The crackdown is being lauded by residents, who have been grappling with the menace of illicit brews for years.

Speaking to KNA, a resident Joseph Kiptoo, expressed his support for the government's efforts, saying, "These illicit brews have been ruining our lives, especially the youth who are the most affected. I am happy the government is taking action to end this menace."

The crackdown has also received support from various organizations, including the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA).

The crackdown will continue until the illicit breweries are completely eliminated from the county.

The County Commissioner has called on residents to support the initiative and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. With the combined efforts of law enforcement, residents, and organizations, the fight against illicit alcohol in Elgeyo Marakwet County is expected to yield positive results
