The Chief of one of the driest parts of Nakuru County John Koskei has been commended by the county government for his tree-planting efforts that have impacted positively on the community in Waseges ward.
Antony Kamau the County Officer-In-Charge of climate change said the exertions, energies, and toils of the Chief Koskei were not only a beacon of hope for his location but, also for the entire county, what would be achieved when individuals are determined to improve their community.
The Senior Chief said planting trees has always been part of his hobbies and having been brought up in the Waseges locations, which has a myriad of environmental issues, ranging from drought to floods, he was strong-minded and firm in changing the area.
He said the achievements of what he has done in his homesteads, neighborhood, and the entire location would easily be replicated to turn the entire county into a greener environment.
The chief said change starts with the self and it has to be visible to those around for it to have any meaningful effect, and to persuade others to follow suit. “Every time a visitor walks into my compound, the first reaction is the appreciation of the over two hundred trees, which are planted in the one acre, and that motivates me a lot.’’
Additionally, he said his entire land looks like a rainforest since every edge is totally covered with trees, and he prefers the exotic ones because they have the capacity of withstanding the drought of the area.
He appreciated the new government’s set targets of growing 15 billion trees in ten years and said it was good practice and should be introduced to young children, especially with primary schools whose compounds are unfortunately bare.
