The youth of Elgeyo Marakwet County have been asked to broaden their horizons beyond the allure of white-collar employment and embrace the wealth of opportunities offered by government-backed loans and poverty alleviation programs.
The Deputy County Commissioner for Marakwet East Ahmed Somo has called upon the youth to break free from the shackles of selectivity and cultivate a mindset that explores diverse income-generating avenues.
In a candid address delivered from his office in Chesoi Wednesday, Somo underscored the need for a pragmatic approach to life, emphasizing that those with the vision and dynamism to recognize and seize locally available opportunities could chart their way to prosperity and realize their dreams.
He expressed concern that a significant portion of funds allocated to the youth enterprise programme remained unutilized, a missed opportunity that could empower countless young individuals to establish and grow their businesses.
Somo encouraged Elgeyo Marakwet youth to form collaborative groups and tap into the resources provided by the youth enterprise fund saying that by doing so, they could access loans that not only have minimal interest rates but also offer manageable repayment terms.
He noted that unlike conventional financial institutions that often demanded stringent collateral, these government loans provided a more accessible path to entrepreneurship.
Further, the Deputy County Commissioner emphasized the role of youth in promoting peace-building activities within their communities and with neighbouring regions.
Noting that a peaceful environment is a prerequisite for sustainable development, Somo urged the youth to take the lead in fostering harmony, which would create a conducive atmosphere for growth and prosperity.
