A mysterious fire has gutted down the entire administration block at Siyenga primary school in Likuyani Sub County, causing massive losses.
Confirming the incident, Likuyani Deputy County Commissioner Henry Metto said the cause of the Friday morning fire that destroyed all property in the administration block still remains unknown.
Metto condemned the fire incident and appealed to members of the public to volunteer any intelligence information to the security agencies so that perpetrators of the same can be brought to book.
He said, “This is a very serious crime because the children are at home for holiday and some people just decided to destroy their property, mainly targeting the administration block.”
“Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are already probing the fire incident. My appeal to members of the public is to let them cooperate and confidentially give information that will help us arrest the culprits,” said the administrator.
Metto said first hand investigation is always done by members of the public before passing the information to the police for processing.
The school head teacher Douglas Munanga regretted the heinous incident saying it is a great setback to the young school with inadequate infrastructure.
He recounted that he received a call from the school’s night guard on the material day, informing him that the administration block was on fire, only for him to rush to the school and find the entire administration block completely burnt down.
Munanga who estimated the value of the destroyed building and property to be over Sh4.5 million said hundreds of uncollected certificates and vital school documents were also burnt into ashes.
He disclosed that the night guard claimed to have been unwell and left the school at around 1am, only for him to come back at 5am, when the administration block was already on fire.
The school’s committee Chair John Makheti appealed to the local National Government Constituency Development Fund to come to the school’s aid and if possible erect a new structure before learning resumes in January.
He said the fire incident remains a mystery as they cannot tell the motive behind the heinous act.
“The culprits’ intentions are still unknown. If it was ordinary theft they would have taken a few items and left without setting ablaze the entire block plus the documents,” he stated.
The chairman appealed to the Siyenga school community including the teachers and the school committee to duly cooperate with investigating arm of the government so that the perpetrators could be brought to book.
