Five killed in road accident in Machakos

Five people were last night killed in a road accident along the Matuu-Garissa road in Machakos County.

According to County Police Commander Joseph Ole Naipayen, the accident occurred after a bus and Nissan matatu collided head on killing the five instantly.

The dead include three male passengers and two females one of them being a 12-year-old girl. 11 others sustained serious injuries and were taken to Matuu Level Four Hospital for treatment.

The County Police Commander said the accident occurred when the driver of the bus headed to Garissa from Matuu refused to give way to the Nissan matatu that was headed in the opposite direction.

"The accident occurred near Kitui junction at around 8 pm. The driver of the bus on reaching the junction barrier did not give way to the Nissan matatu which was on his lane. The two vehicles collided and lost control before veering of the road," he said.

Naipayen said the drivers of both vehicles were injured. The bodies were taken to the hospital's mortuary while the vehicles were towed to Matuu Police Station pending investigations.
