A form-one student at St Matthias Secondary school has died after being shot during Thursday’s anti-government demonstrations in Busia town.

Confirming the incident, the schools’ deputy Principal Eliud Musahi said that Elvis Musungu met his death while police officers were engaging in running battles with the ‘jobless’ group in Busia town.

“We cannot confidently say where he was coming from when he was shot because he did not report to school on that day,” Musahi said.

He added that the demise of Musungu caused fear in other day scholars who requested the school administration to allow them to stay away from school until the situation returns to normal.

“This morning, I talked to the County Director of Education concerning the incident, he consulted the County Commissioner and we have been allowed to release day scholars to stay at home until Monday,” he said.

The deputy principal urged the government to devise other ways of dealing with protestors instead of confrontations that are causing great damage to the school.

“Those students on boarding are still here in school and we have requested for security officers to help man the school,” he said, adding that the anti-government protestors threatened to bring down the institution's perimeter wall.

Jacob Oketch, a businessman in the Bulanda area, blamed police officers for breaking into his premises and beating him.

Oketch further alleged that the officers made away with some cash and destroyed property at his business premises.

Florence Orango, a resident of Bulanda said that the officers assaulted her in the house at around 5 pm.

Orango also claimed that the officers made away with Sh3,000 and a mobile phone.

However, Busia County Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto said that security officers are visiting various health facilities in the town to ascertain the number of casualties and the possible causes of their death or injuries.
