The national government through the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) has commissioned the construction of a water project in Matara Village, Gwassi Central Location within Suba South Sub-County.

This project comes as a blessing to Matara residents who now have a reason to smile after many years of persistent water shortages.

The multi-million project which is dubbed Matara Community Water Project will be implemented by the LBDA to benefit the community and its environs.

LBDA Director Lavender Ojala reiterated that once completed, the project would serve more than 2000 households.

The project, to be completed in three months’ time, will also aid in promoting agricultural activities in the area.

“I spoke to the water engineer and he said the water will be a lot that we will not only use for domestic purposes but also for irrigation,” she said.

It will serve not only the community members but also two schools, God Bura Primary and Secondary as well as a local church.

Ojala who commissioned the water project together with Suba Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Sebastian Okiring said Suba has been fighting cholera outbreaks and she was hopeful that the project would reduce spread of the disease.

Okiring was thankful to the National Government for the project and was positive that it would address water shortages in the area.

“On behalf of the community, I want to thank the government through LBDA for bringing this project to this village. Whoever promoted this idea and found it necessary to implement it here is really addressing a serious problem that has really inconvenienced our people,” he stated.

He added that the community which spent a lot of time searching for water would now have more time to engage in economic activities.
