Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir asked President William Ruto to fulfill his promise to the people by ensuring that all cases filed against protesters who opposed the government are dismissed.

Speaking during the granting of grants to various groups of fishermen from Mombasa and its environs on Friday, July 26, 2024 , Nassir told Ruto that those who were injured and killed during the protest must also be compensated.

"Sir, I have heard you and I have also heard the words of the leader of my party Raila Amollo Odinga, those who were injured and killed during the protest must be paid. Action should also be taken against those police officers who used excessive force," he said.

The head of the county asked the President to withdraw the cases of all those arrested during the protest.

"Be true to your word and I know you will. Drop the case against those arrested," Nassir added.

Ruto gave in to the opposition's demand on Wednesday, releasing everyone who had detained during the recent protests.

Ruto instructed the security agencies to comply with the order.

The Head of State at the same time ordered all charges pressed against them to be dropped.

"I am asking the Criminal Justice Institutions to take decisive action and ensure that people who may have been innocently arrested on the wrong side are released and prosecuted," he said.

Ruto is in the coastal region for a developmental visit to the counties of Kilifi and Mombasa.

He is accompanied by Governors Abdullswamad Nassir (Mombasa), Fatuma Achani (Kwale), former Minister Aisha Jumwa, Issa Timamy (Lamu), Godhana Dhadho (Tana River), MPs and MCAs.
