Visa Oshwal primary school in Baringo county have exercised their democratic right to vote in new leaders during an exercise overseen by the electoral body (IEBC).

The hotly contested exercise sought to fill in 10 elective positions of the president which was won by Allan Bor who was elected unopposed to replace his predecessor who left the school last year after completing standard eight.

Bor will be deputized by Patience Jebet while Festus Kimuge clinched the Speaker’s seat after beating two of his opponents; Sheila Yegon was elected the deputy speaker.

In the election exercise, the category of Cabinet Secretaries (CS) which had seven slots became the one with the highest number of positions to represent the Information Communications Technologies ICT, Justice and Legal Affairs, Sports, Education, Environment, Internal and External Affairs and Children's welfare departments.

The Senate category had four vacancies and the voters successfully managed to elect leaders to represent junior secondary, grades 1-3, grades 4 and 5, grade 6 and standard eight.

However, during the election which was conducted peacefully, there was a special needs category in which two pupils were nominated to represent.

Deputy Returning Officer for Baringo County Gilbert ole Kitrene who was manning the elections said he was delighted that the pupils had sufficient knowledge on voting processes, a move which he noted that it will aid them in the future when selecting leaders in General elections.

Kitrene congratulated the pupils for their cooperation and thanked their teachers for working smoothly with them.

"I am glad you had a sense of how the election process was supposed to go. Despite the long queues, voters' confusion of ballot boxes and the rest of the elements making up the voting process, I am happy to note that only a few votes were spoiled but you'll get better by the next election," he said.

The school’s head teacher who was grateful to IEBC for helping them conduct the elections said the exercise provided a great opportunity for the pupils to learn more about the operations of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) that exposed them to the voting process.

The newly elected school’s president thanked fellow pupils for choosing him and he vowed to fulfill his manifesto of making the institution prosper in all aspects from education, discipline, cleanliness, working harmoniously with the school’s administration and cooperating with fellow leaders.

Meanwhile, one of the female candidates who did not win the elective seats conceded defeat and stated that she is willing to embrace and welcome the new leaders because no race is without winners or losers.

A grade four pupil Lewis Kiplimo who remarked that the election was an incredible experience noted that he learned a lot adding that was overjoyed because most of the leaders he voted for emerged victors and he is looking forward to the next election.
