Mombasa gubernatorial hopeful Mike Sonko has opened up on his move to shift his political base from Nairobi to the Coast, stating that the decision came from his party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Speaking during an interview with KTN News on Sunday night, Sonko noted that he was keen to make a return to Nairobi politics, but Kalonzo advised him otherwise, citing increased interest in the city.
“I respect my party leader (Kalonzo Musyoka). He is the one who came with this decision, kule alitoka nayo sijui… Aliniambia kijana yangu skiza enda Mombasa, Nairobi kuna vita mingi, interest mingi achana nayo. Because I respect him, I accepted. I was not rejected by the great people of Nairobi,” Sonko said in part.

Sonko vowed to empower women and youth to undertake entrepreneurship, upgrade medical facilities and improve access to healthcare, fight poverty and conduct rehabilitation among youth affected by drug use if elected Mombasa governor in August 2022.
He was recently handed Wiper Party’s ticket to contest in the Mombasa gubernatorial race. Sonko will face off with among others; Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir and former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar.
His decision to join the Mombasa gubernatorial race complicates the equation for Azimio la Umoja as they’ll could end up with two candidates on the ballot, which may give an advantage to UDA’s Hassan Omar.
