Mombasa gubernatorial hopeful Mike Sonko has opened up on the secret recordings he made while serving as Nairobi Governor, claiming that his first recording device came from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking during an interview with KTN News on Sunday night, Sonko claimed that after assuming office as Nairobi governor, some officials at City Hall bribed him with Kshs18 million.
Surprised by the incident, he says he took the money to State House and reported the same to the President. It is at this point that the Head of State reportedly gave him secret recording devices to capture the rot at City Hall.
“...Jioni I went to State House, I told the President ati hii pesa ni yangu nimepewa Ksh18 million..The president gave me an engineer with some recording devices, the president told me go ujue loop hole iko wapi upande wa revenue.
“I captured the evidence and went back to the president. He intervened, we stopped cash collection in Nairobi County, that was our first achievement,” Sonko said.

Sonko noted that although many criticised him for having secret recording devices, he meant well, adding that his objective was to ensure the city was cleaned and cartels weeded out.
During his tenure as governor, Sonko made several secret recordings that include; how money was allegedly being swindled by some influential officers at city hall and his controversial phone conversation with Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris among others.
Meanwhile, Sonko has promised to revolutionise Mombasa County and improve the living standards of locals if he is elected governor in August 2022.
Sonko was recently handed Wiper Party’s ticket to contest in the Mombasa gubernatorial race. He will face off with among others; Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir and former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar.
