Kalonzo, Wamalwa address claims of receiving millions to stop Gachagua’s impeachment

By Peter Ochieng

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his DAP-Kenya counterpart Eugene Wamalwa, have responded to claims of receiving millions of shillings, with a view of stopping Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment.

The Senate upheld Gachagua’s impeachment last week. He has however mounted a fierce legal battle, through his lawyers to try and overturn the process.

Reports alleged that the two leaders received Sh150 million to oppose, and probably stop Gachagua’s impeachment. Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale shared a post on his verified X account, which claimed that they received the said amount.

“Fact or misinformation?” Khalwale captioned the poster. “Hope you have been able to separate fact from fiction my brother @DrBKhalwale,” responded Wamalwa.

The two leaders have been vocal against Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment, adding that his removal was nothing short of political machinations.

"This is a country that has now been bedevilled by corruption of all kinds. Unless the courts come and stop the whole process, Gachagua's goose is cooked,” Kalonzo said during an interview on Citizen TV, on October 16.

True to his word, Senators voted in favour of an impeachment motion that originated from the National Assembly.

The motion, supported by over 280 Members of Parliament (MPs) was tabled by Kibwezi West legislature Mwengi Mutuse, who levelled 11 allegations against the impeached DP. Senators voted in favour of only five claims.

Musyoka and Wamalwa were among politicians who visited Gachagua at the Karen hospital in Nairobi, after he was hospitalised over intense chest pains, minutes before facing the Senate for a cross-examination exercise.

Wamalwa stated that the impeached DP nearly suffered a stroke.

"His doctors have told us that when he was admitted here, he had serious chest pains. In fact, he had very high blood pressure. The stress he had gone through, he was short of getting a stroke but they admitted him. They have managed him," said Wamalwa.

"We thank Dr. Gikonyo and his team of doctors for the good care they have given Rigathi Gachagua," added the former devolution and Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS).
