Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has faulted leaders from Ukambani region for blindly supporting the opposition for decades leading to poverty in the region.

Gachagua defined politics as the fight for scarce resources arguing that it is only those in government that benefit from the scarce resources leading to development.

He therefore called on the community to join the government in large numbers to have a stake in the national cake.

Speaking in Mbiuni, Mwala Machakos County during the burial of Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka Musau’s mother Mrs Ann Kalekye on Tuesday, the Deputy President said his Mt Kenya community defied leadership direction from the former President Uhuru Kenyatta to support the opposition and chose President William Ruto instead.

He termed the decision a milestone in Kenyan politics which other communities should emulate if they want development which he noted result from being in government.

“Kalonzo is not even a President, why do you blindly follow him? We defied Uhuru Kenyatta who was the President to forge a united front for our region's interest. Why don't leaders from Ukambani have the courage to follow the interests of the region first”? challenged Gachagua.

Gachagua reiterated that supporting the government brings development and being in the opposition means missing out on scarce resources which would in turn lead to underdevelopment.

He commended Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka Musau for making the right decision to support President William Ruto hence his position to chair the energy committee in parliament as well his appointment to be the national organizing secretary of the United Democratic Alliance party.

The Deputy President extended an invitation to leaders from the region to join him and President Ruto in making the next government when campaigns for 2027 General Election commence in October 2026.

He praised Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti for not taking part in the recent Azimio la Umoja demonstrations saying she would have compromised her exemplary leadership, ‘beauty and brains’ by stooping too low to put a cooking pot on her head like the demonstrators did.

The three South Eastern Counties of Kenya Kitui, Machakos and Makueni mainly occupied by the Kamba community have three Governors, Senators and Women Representatives elected on Wiper Party led by former Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua termed the Kalonzo Musyoka led negotiations will yield no fruit for the people since Azimio leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto met privately in Mombasa and sealed a deal whose details remain known only to the two and the ongoing negotiations are just but a waste of time.

The Deputy President however said the government will work for all the people in the country since they are all taxpayers adding that the Yatta water dam among others top in the list of priority projects for the people of Machakos to solve the perennial water shortage in the region.

Gachagu eulogized the late 81 years old Ann Kalekye Musau as a model matriarch and champion for education raising 13 children amid limited resources.
