A KCSE candidate at Kapsabet Boys High School in Nandi County emerged top in a Mathematics contest held at the school.

Kelvin Kemboi was declared the overall winner of the secondary school’s mathematics competition in which 76 high schools participated and consequently won an academic scholarship to study in Australia courtesy of Grace International Migration.

The organisation helps link students to institutions of higher learning in the UK, India, the US among other countries.

Speaking to KNA after being declared the winner, Kemboi who was extremely excited about the opportunity said he knew mathematics was his favourite subject but he did not expect to win.

“I thank God for the opportunity and my teachers for the inspiration. I promise to do my best while in Australia,” he said

Kusolo Chepkesei from Moi Girls’ Eldoret secured a scholarship to pursue a degree of her choice in Strathmore University courtesy of Strathmore University after becoming the best girl in Mathematics.

“Maths is my best subject and I love it. I practice on the subject very much,” she said

Mr Kipchumba Korir, the event’s coordinator stated that the 20th edition of Annual mathematics contest was meant to bring together leaners across the country to share their experiences in the area of Mathematics and boost their confidence

Speaking during the event, Nandi County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture Dr Kiplimo Lagat expressed his delight in the high number of students who showed up for the contest adding that the subject shaped his career path.

Dr Lagat who was also a motivational speaker during the event encouraged students to work hard especially in mathematics so that they can join university and pursue better careers.

In the form one category, Kapsabet boys emerged victorious with a mean of 10.5 followed by Kipsigis Girls’ with 6.4. Utumishi Academy came third with a mean of 4.4 closing the top three category.

In form two category, the competition was tougher than expected. Kapsabet boys’ came first with a mean score of 4.0 followed by Moi Girls’ Eldoret with 3.9 and Kipsigis girls’ followed closely with 3.8.

Kapsabet boys also carried the day in the form three category with a mean score of 7.5. Friends School Kamusinga boys’ followed with 6.0. In the third position, Paul Boit boys’ shared the position with Moi girls’ Eldoret with both schools scoring a mean of 4.0.

Boy schools carried the day in the battle of wits in the candidate class’ contest with the top three positions going exclusively to them. Kapsabet boys’ came first with a mean score of 6.0. Thika High School took the second position with 3.8 and St. Patrick’s Iten boys came third with a mean score of 3.7.
