The Kenyan government has marked a major milestone in its efforts to improve its capacity in forest fire management with the launch of the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Digital Radio Network and Early Fire Video Detection system.

Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Aden Duale, hosted France's Minister of State for Francophonie and International Partnerships, Mr. Thani Mohammed Soilihi, for this milestone event in Nairobi.

This is an element of the bigger French-funded USD 22 million project to boost the efficiency of operations of KFS in a bid to fight forest fires across the flagship ecosystems: Mau, Aberdares, and Mt. Kenya.

These are critical for biodiversity and livelihoods, spilling into 14 counties across the country, facing devastating wildfires that, with time, have been worsened by climate change.

"This project is an important component of our continued efforts to care for the environment and conserve our forest ecosystems," Duale said while launching the project.

He added that the improvements derived from the project fit perfectly into Kenya's ambitious 15 billion tree-growing campaign to replace and increase the nation's forest cover.

The KFS is all poised for a revolution in its strategy to handle forest fire risks with advanced technology. The new equipment includes fire engines, personal protective equipment, chaff trucks, digital communications, surveillance drones, and a bespoke command center at KFS Headquarters.

These resources shall greatly enhance this agency's level of preparedness and response times, allowing them to act fast and deploy efficient mitigation strategies.

Those present at the launch included the French Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Amaud Suquet, and senior ministry officials such as Principal Secretaries Mr. Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry) and Dr. Eng. Festus Ng'eno (Environment and Climate Change).

Also in attendance was the Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko, further emphasizing the joint approach of the partnership between Kenya and France.

The integration of technological advancements into KFS operations serves as a proactive shift in managing the forest resources with better management for ecological resilience.

With increasing global temperatures and extreme weather events, these among other initiatives are quite vital in ensuring that Kenya's rich biodiversity is protected, as well as guaranteeing the country's natural resources for generations to come.

In directing focus anew through the use of technologically driven solutions, Kenya takes one of the important steps toward mitigating the risks from forest fires, which is fundamental to maintaining ecological integrity in its key forest ecosystems.
