The Kilgoris-Lolgorian Water and Sanitation Project, a crucial infrastructure initiative aimed at improving access to clean water and sanitation for thousands of residents, is now 90% complete.

The project, worth Sh589 million, is being financed by the African Development Bank in partnership with the Government of Kenya and is part of the broader Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (KTSWSSP).

During an inspection of the project site today, Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Eric Muga Muriithi, who leads the project’s oversight, highlighted the significance of the development, which is set to benefit over 60,000 people in the towns of Kilgoris and Lolgorian in Trans Mara West and South.

Muriithi noted that the Kilgoris-Lolgorian project is a key part of Kenya’s ongoing efforts to improve water and sanitation services, especially in underserved areas.

"The project aims to enhance water supply and wastewater management services in these towns to drive commercial activity, improve residents' quality of life, and build resilience to climate variability," Muriithi said during the site visit.

The Kilgoris-Lolgorian Water and Sanitation Project is one of several initiatives under the KTSWSSP, a nationwide program designed to expand and modernize water infrastructure in urban areas.

This particular project involves the construction of several key facilities, including a water intake, a raw water main, and a conventional water treatment plant.

A 9.6-kilometer treated water transmission main is being installed, along with a 30.5-kilometer distribution line to Kilgoris town and a 13-kilometer distribution line to Lolgorian town.

In addition to the new pipelines, three large storage tanks are being constructed at key locations to store and supply clean water.

These include a tank at Intimigom Primary School, another near Kilgoris Boys High School, and a third on a hill in Lolgorian town.

Once completed, these facilities will ensure that residents have consistent access to clean water, even during periods of drought or low rainfall.

The project, which is projected to be fully completed by December 30, 2024, is expected to catalyze economic growth by providing reliable water services.

It will also contribute to the health and well-being of the local population, addressing long-standing challenges in water supply and wastewater management.

With its completion on the horizon, the Kilgoris-Lolgorian project is a significant step towards achieving sustainable development in Trans Mara West and South.
