Kirinyaga Women Rep records statement with DCI

Njeri Maina, the Women Representative for Kirinyaga County, who was allegedly assaulted by thugs resulting in severe head injuries, has given her statement at the Kerugoya DCI offices.
Since the incident on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, she has been receiving treatment at Nairobi hospital.
She arrived at the DCI offices on Friday morning in a wheelchair, accompanied by her attorney and other individuals, including Otiende Omollo, the MP for Rarieda.
The injury occurred when a meeting she was attending became violent.
Maina, who spoke to the press immediately after the incident, said she was assaulted while on a walking tour to engage with the people in Kerugoya town.
She claimed that the thugs, who she recognized, tried to prevent her from speaking to the public.
"I recognize them. I've been injured, but I will stand up for the people of Kirinyaga County. I was elected here in Kirinyaga, and the people must have their rights," she stated.
Following the incident, Maina, accompanied by David Mathenge, the MCA for Baragwi Ward, was quickly taken to Kerugoya Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Nairobi Hospital.
The assault has been widely condemned by local residents and National Assembly members.
Kimani Ichung’wa, the Majority Party Leader, informed the House that Maina is now stable after receiving medical treatment.
"I've been informed she's stable, and we wish her a speedy recovery. I trust that the police and relevant authorities will act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice," Ichung’wa stated.
Opiyo Wandayi, the Minority Party Leader, insisted that the police investigation should not only focus on the attackers but also on those who funded the incident.
