Teachers Trade Union has moved in to calm teachers who had camped outside their County Teachers Service Commission (TSC) offices, complaining of unfairness in transfers that ignored applicants from their areas of jurisdiction.
The Kenya National Union of Techers (Knut) officials from the Eastern Region, convinced the teachers to go back to their work stations, after assuring them that all their grievances will be addressed by the TSC County Director's Office.
The Eastern Region KNUT Spokesperson, Dia Watia, assured the teachers that all matters will be addressed and the teachers will be given the necessary services by the TSC County Director's Office. The same assurance was given by the Region KNUT Executive Secretary, Njeru Mutani.
The aggrieved teachers from Tharaka North and South Sub-counties had been complaining that the TSC County detector`s Office, has ignored their applications for transfers, unlike their colleagues in the other Sub-counties.
The 30 teachers had spent the whole of Monday night at the Office of the County Director and had claimed that they would not leave until they registered their complaints to the County Director, who has been out of the office for two weeks.
Speaking to KNA, Mutinda Muriungi, the Chair of Tharaka North and South teachers’ Association and a teacher at Meru County, Tigania Sub-county, lamented that he was very frustrated
"Before the President was elected, he promised to end delocalization of teachers and that all teachers will be given transfer letters as par their original residence without discrimination.
But when the letters came out, teachers from Maara, Igambang’ombe and Meru South Sub-counties, were relocated but our plight was ignored," said Mr. Muriungi.
The teacher’s leader added that TSC County Director had hidden himself for two weeks, without coming out to explain to them what is happening.
The KNUT regional officials instructed all the teachers who needed the transfer, to present appeals and attach copies of their original Identity cards, to ensure they are from Tharaka North and South.
Married couples were instructed to submit their marriage certificate, as a proof so that they are not left out as well.
Mutani added that he will ensure that all the matters are addressed and hardship allowances in areas such as Igambang`ombe included.
