Lusaka donates Sh1 million as wind destroys property at Butonge High School
By Peter Ochieng
Bungoma governor Kenneth Makelo Lusaka on Friday visited Butonge High School in Sirisia constituency, hours after strong winds destroyed property at the institution.
The wind, accompanied by heavy rainfall blew off rooms of some of the classrooms in the school.
Lusaka gave a personal contribution of Sh1 million to kick start repairs of the damaged roofs.
He also donated foodstuffs. “It is quite unfortunate that such a calamity befell this institution. I hope this donation goes a long way in regaining normalcy,” said the county chief.
No casualties were reported during the unfortunate incident.
“We want to thank God that it is only the classes that were destroyed, we never lost any life. We have come to say sorry and we shall stand with you. Don’t be distracted because God loves you and we know you are going to perform even better in your KCSE exams this year. Just be calm and I know come next year we will come to celebrate and not to mourn the loss of property.”
The governor was flanked by a host of leaders, among them Sirisia Member of Parliament (MP) John Koyi Waluke.
“Sorry for what happened, but I am grateful to God that none of you got injured. Feel happy; feel proud, cheer up, prepare properly for your exams. This should not be a scapegoat to say that wind affected our preparations.”
"We are going to ensure that in this short period, we have done repairs to all buildings that have been destroyed,” added the legislature.
The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2023 exams start this month, and conclude towards the end of November.
