Police in Meru are investigating an incident where an 82-years-old man employed as a watchman at a factory was found dead.
According to Imenti North Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Mr Ezekiel Chepkwony, Alois Gitonga was working at Kathurine Coffee Factory where he was found dead on Monday morning.
Mr Chepkwony said that the factory manager told the police that he found the deceased in one of the rooms in the factory with his mouth and hands tied.
“Preliminary observations indicate that the old man might have died of suffocation since his mouth and nose were all covered and that he had no external injuries,” said Mr Chepkwony.
Speaking to KNA, the Imenti North Officer Commanding Police Division, said that the police arrived at the scene of the incident around 11:00am and took the body to Meru teaching and referral hospital mortuary.
He added that 29 bags of Grade A coffee worth Sh3.5 million were stolen during the incident.
He added that the factory has no Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) making it hard for them to investigate the matter.
He added that the body of the deceased is being preserved at the Meru teaching and referral hospital mortuary waiting for postmortem to determine cause of death.
