Maseno University student killed during Azimio demos buried
Emotions ran high on Wednesday, during the burial of a Maseno University student killed during demos called by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya leader, Raila Odinga.
William Mayange was buried in Nyamira County.
He died on March 20th, 2023 after reportedly being shot by police, during the first day of protests to push for electoral justice and demand for lowering of the cost of living.
Kisumu governor Anyang' Nyong'o, represented Odinga during the burial.
Nyong'o said the entire Azimio leadership was stunned by killing of the third year student, during what was expected to be a peaceful protest.
"Just like many Kenyans, we are angry and stunned by the killing of this innocent University student who would be in class now, studying for his exams," said Nyong'o.
"Why did the police officer use live bullets instead of rubber bullets or tear gas? Why has this officer not been arrested? When will Evelyn and Joash get justice for their son?"
He said as Azimio demands immediate arrest of the officer linked to the killing of William.
"As Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance, we demand justice for this young man lying over there. We demand that the officer who killed him be arrested and charged in court within the next seven days," added the second term County boss.
The demos were called off by Odinga on Sunday, but Nyong'o insist they have not abandoned their quest to have the August, 2022 presidential servers opened.
"We have not withdrawn our demand for the opening of the servers to confirm the true outcome of the August 2022 Presidential elections."
Odinga claims he won the contest with 8 million votes, against President William Ruto's less than 5 million.
"We also want to state here as we burry William today, that we are not interested in a political handshake as our competitors have been saying," said Nyong'o, a position long held by his party leader.
Additionally, governor Nyong'o said they are willing to honestly discuss the "state of our country and these discussions must be honest and above board and with clean hands."
