Police have launched investigations into the murder of a sand harvester in Rambira beach in Karachuonyo, Homa Bay county.
The middle aged man was allegedly killed by his fellow sand harvester, following a dispute over sale of sand.
Rachuonyo North Sub County Police Commander Lydia Parteiye said that they have arrested a suspect, who was being interrogated.
Parteiye said the deceased identified as Juma Saidi died after he was hit on the neck with a spade after a disagreement with the suspect, over whose sand to sell to a buyer who had just arrived.
According to Kamser Seka Sub Location Assistant Chief Japheth Nyaoke, the two were initially engaged in a verbal exchange, which degenerated into a physical fight during which the deceased was hacked with a spade.
“Saidi sustained serious injuries on the neck which led to his death, even as their colleagues tried in vain to intervene,” Nyaoke said.
The deceased died moments later as he was being rushed to Kendu Bay Sub-County Hospital.
The suspect is being detained at the Kendu Bay police station.
Nyaoke advised residents to embrace tolerance and avoid taking the law into their own hands. The administrator said they also confiscated the killer weapon.
The deceased’s body was moved to Kendu Adventist Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
