The Ministry of Education has released 50 million shillings to 25 primary and secondary schools in Western region towards construction of classrooms and laboratories.
According to the Western Regional Director of Education Jared Obiero, the benefiting schools are those in sub counties found to be needy.
He said each of the benefiting schools has received two million shillings for the facilities upgrade.
The RDE further revealed that the government released 20 million shillings to Butere Boys’ school towards construction of a dining hall and another 10 million shillings to Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls School for infrastructure and rehabilitation of facilities.
Last April, Butere Boys school was closed for three weeks after over 100 students at the school exhibited cholera-like symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea.
Similarly, the Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ school suffered a disease outbreak that killed three students and a teacher, a situation that forced the government institute infrastructure improvement at the school before it was reopened.
The RDE spoke during a regional service delivery coordination and management committee meeting held in Kakamega chaired by the Regional Commissioner Samson Macharaia.
Mr Obiero said the Ministry of Education was also putting up Integrated Learning Centres (ILC) in all primary schools to support the Competency- Based Curriculum (CBC) to aid in learning.
