By Peter Ochieng

Noordin Mohamed Haji is the next Director General, National Intelligence Service (NIS) in waiting.

Haji, the outgoing Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is poised to take over from Major General retired Philip Wachira Kameru, who is expected to retire.

On Tuesday, Members of Parliament (MPs) approved the nomination of Haji as the next NIS boss, following his appointment by President William Ruto last month.

MPs unanimously adopted the report by the departmental committee on defense, intelligence and foreign relations, which vetted Haji.

Belgut MP Nelson Koech, the committee chair said that they threw out a host of petitions against Haji during the vetting process, after finding no merit in them. "The nominee meets the requirements of Chapter 6," said Koech.

Chapter six of the constitution speaks on ethics and intergrity of public servants.

The report recieved massive support from several MPs, who were given a chance by House Speaker Moses Wetang'ula.

"This is one appointment that is going to take this country foward," said Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.

Kimani Ichung'wah, leader of majority in the National Aseembly reminded Haji of the huge task that awaits him.

"He is getting into an office that is extremely sensitive. He should safeguard the lives and property of people in Northern Kenya and the Coastal belt."

Al - Shabaab militants on most occassions carry out terrorist attacks in the two regions.

Haji has served as DPP since 2018, when he took over from Keriako Tobiko.

Before then, he served as the deputy director of the counter-organised crime unit.

He is expected to be sworn in and immediately start serving as the country's next spymaster.
