A suspect in the killing of a university of Eldoret (UOE) student three weeks ago will be detained for six days, pending completion of investigations.
The third year UOE student, Kenneth Kibet who appeared before Eldoret Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Otenyo was arrested by a team of police officers from the directorate of criminal investigations department on May 1 at the scene of crime.
Kibet is alleged to have killed Sheila Jemutai, said to be his fiancée, before attempting to commit suicide.
According to court documents, the suspect was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital where he has been receiving treatment before being discharged three days ago
The suspect allegedly committed the offence using a kitchen knife at the deceased’s rental house at Sogomo trading centre adjacent to UOE.
The incident reportedly occurred on May 1, 2023 when the suspect is said to have visited the deceased.
Investigating Officer Edward Ndemo in his affidavit filed in court asked the court to grant them 14 days to enable officers attached to DCI conclusively investigate the murder incident.
The magistrate directed that the suspect be detained at Eldoret central police station cells following prayers filed by police.
"After having carefully considered the application filed by the police and there being no objection from the suspect, I find there are compelling reasons to warrant detention.
He directed the police to present the suspect in court on May 30 for further direction.
