Despite not enjoying the normal classroom environment like other candidates in the country when preparing for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, a murder suspect managed to score 402 marks.
Amelia Jacobeth Liabule who is facing murder charges, amazed the prison authorities and other inmates at the Kakamega women’s prison when she delivered an outstanding performance in the 2021 KCPE exams which were released on Monday, March 28, 2022, by Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha.
Amelia, 31, who has been behind bars for one year, said she did not give up in life. She attributed her success to hard work and determination though she said that after she was arrested and charged with murder, life has not been easy for her.
She said she decided not to mourn about her condition and focused on something positive in her life. She opted to spend her free time to study and prepare for the final exams.
“My plan now is to continue studying and to get prepared for other future exams. The fact that one is behind bars does not mean your brain is behind bars. All one needs to do is to stay focused and go for the available opportunities to leave a mark on those around you.” She said.

The officer in charge at the prison, Ms Doreen Anabaka, who was excited by the performance applauded the inmates for their performance.
“They have given us an excellent performance despite the many challenges they have been going through while preparing for the exam,” she said.
