The Muslim World League has provided relief food and supplies to at least a thousand flood victims in Garissa, who are expected to return to their homes by the end of the month.
The El Niño floods have affected many around late last year, some have returned to their homes and have resumed their normal activities, but some, particularly those in the worst-hit areas, have not returned due to destroyed homes and muddy conditions.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the Muslim World League Country Director Dr. Hassan Mohamed Idris said that in addition to the food aid, his organization will be looking on ways to help them in rebuilding their houses destroyed by the flash floods. The distributed supplies include; 5 kg of sugar, 5 kg of rice, 2 liters of cooking oil, 5kg of maize flour, 1 kg of salt, blankets and mosquito nets.
“As part of our agenda to help those affected by any natural disasters, we have come here to help our brothers who were affected by the El Niño floods,” Idris said. Hence, the Muslim World League plans to assist families in rebuilding their homes and returning to their homes due to the poor conditions in the camp.
Harat Maalim, Iftin location chief, said that the flood affected victims are mainly from Ziwani, Bakuyu and Mathengeni area along the Tana River.
