Kikuyu member of Parliament and National Assembly majority leader Kimani Ichung’wa has pledged to provide Sh5 million for the renovation of classrooms and expansion of the administration block at Gikambura Primary School.

Speaking Friday when he unveiled nine upgraded classrooms and donated 50 lockers and seats to the school, the MP said that the administration block expansion, especially the staff room will boost teachers’ productivity as well as make their working environment conducive.

“I will contribute Sh5 million to further enhance the school, out of this, Sh 2 million is going to be allocated for upgrading and expanding the administration block while the remaining Sh3 million will be for the renovation of other classes,” he said.

Ichung’wa reiterated that it was time for elected leaders to deliver on their promises during campaigns.

He said, “It is you, the people of Kikuyu, who gave us the mandate to serve you. That is why we are upgrading these classrooms. We are going to fix the remaining classrooms and since I hear the teachers are complaining of the cold, we will fix their staff room this year,” he asserted.

He called upon the Engineers on the ground to put up a cabro road (Concrete paved rocks) at the main road into the entrance of the school.

“I do not want children stepping on mud. When a child steps out of the classroom, they should step on the pavement paths in the school,” he said humorously. “And when they step out of the school they move on to a cabro road and then tarmac road all the way home,” he continued.

The MP called upon parents to put more effort into fostering development for their children and also support the school and County government's initiative for development.

The MP noted that plans are underway and a site has already been identified where a borehole will be sunk and this will sort out the water shortage faced by the school and also the surrounding area.

Susan Kimani, Gikambura school head teacher thanked the MP for the good job done in the school.

The renovation process, she said, began in September last year and this saw some pupils use the neighboring PCEA Church Gikambura's hall for learning noting that the contractor did due diligence and that they were happy with the results.

She however raised concern about ECD classes occupying primary and junior secondary classrooms saying “County government says ECD belongs to them yet they have failed to build dedicated ECD structures.

We request, the County government to take responsibility for the ECDE and their needs. It is quite unfortunate that our primary school lacks classrooms because we have to compromise for the ECDE pupils,” she lamented.

She further said that delayed funds is a big challenge saying the Sh289,450 capitations for January have not been received and hoped that it would come in soon.

Ms Kimani urged parents to get involved and be more engaged in the education development of the school and their children.

County Assembly Member from Karai, Samuel Njoroge expressed gratitude to the MP and the County government, acknowledging their commitment to educational progress.
